FAQs:
Should I use Muriatic Acid to wash my previously painted cement patio? If so, what is the correct procedure to ensure that I also protect my landscaping plants?
Yes, you can. Washing cement with Crown Muriatic Acid ensures that small bits of old paint are released, allowing for a better bond for the new coating to be applied. As Muriatic Acid manufacturers, here is our recommendation for product use:
- First, dilute 1 part acid to 4 parts water by pouring acid into water. Never pour water on acid. Next, thoroughly soak the cement with water and spray the acid with a spray bottle. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves.
- Avoid spraying on windy days or days with a temperature exceeding 90°F. Scrub the acid with a stiff brush to maximize cleaning. After 15-30 minutes, pour baking soda onto the cement to neutralize the acid. (For a 12 ‘ x12′ patio, use 2 regular-sized boxes).
- Allow the baking soda to sit for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse the cement off with water for 10-15 minutes*.
* The water will dilute the products from the neutralization reaction and shouldn’t harm most plants. However, for rose bushes and maple trees, the rinsing time should increase to over 20 minutes and should be performed before noon to minimize the effect on such plants.
What is the concentration of Crown Muriatic Acid?
Crown Muriatic Acid is 31.45% Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), has a molarity of 10 mol/L, and a density of 1.045 g/mL. Note that for the Crown NEXT/safer, Muriatic acid can range from 8% to 15% concentration. For exact concentrations, titration of the acid should be used for the most accurate measurements.
Can I use Muriatic Acid for concrete in indoor applications (such as etching the concrete of a basement floor)?
No. It is not recommended for indoor use. The use of Muriatic Acid requires a well-ventilated area. The acid is very corrosive and will damage many surfaces.
